SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The #5 Cortland Red Dragons used a balanced scoring attack with six different scorers to defeat the Western New England Golden Bears, 9-1, in a non-conference match-up on Saturday (Apr. 16) at Golden Bear Stadium.
The Red Dragons, who are ranked fifth in the current USILA poll, improve to 10-2 on the year. The Golden Bears, who received votes in the USILA poll, slip to 10-4 on the season.
Cortland scored the opening goal in the first quarter on a man-up goal by senior attack
Jay DiStefano (Huntington, NY) at 4:54. He was assisted by freshman midfielder
Joe Slavik (Binghamton, NY).
After an extremely evenly matched first stanza, the Red Dragons stretched their lead to 6-0 before the half with a big second period.
Slavik scored on a feed from DiStefano to open the period, with two quick goals by junior attack

Pat Hayes (Mastic, NY) and
Neal Hopps (Akwesasne, NY) tallied the final two goals of the second.
The Golden Bears cut the lead to 7-1 in the third quarter on a goal from freshman attack

Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) winning 8-of-12 draws he took. Martin also led the team with four ground balls.
The Red Dragons converted 3-of-4 man-up opportunities, while the Golden Bears went 0-for-6.
