Western New England tops Wentworth 18-7 to stay unbeaten in conference play

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Liam Bokanovich (Sandwich, MA) scored a career-high five goals to lead Western New England to an 18-7 victory at Wentworth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play on Tuesday (Apr. 19) night at Sweeney Field.

The Golden Bears improve to 11-4 on the year with a perfect 9-0 mark in conference; the Leopards slip to 1-9 overall and are now 0-9 in TCCC action.

Western New England jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as senior midfielder Colin Houlihan (Ledyard, CT) and classmate Mike Santare (South Salem, NY) scored within 1:13 of each other.

The Leopards battled back to tie the game with 7:12 left in the opening quarter as sophomore midfielder Mark Pappas (Worcester, MA) and freshman attack Jeff Guilherme (Derry, NH) scored for the hosts.

Bokanovich scored with 4:11 remaining in the first to give WNEC a 3-2 edge, igniting a 9-0 run in which the Leopards were held scoreless for 26:40. He scored three times during the run.

Senior midfielder Marty O'Brien (West Springfield, MA) scored three goals; while Santare and sophomore attack Corrigan Harreys (Deep River, CT) each contributed two goals and an assist.

Freshman attacker Adam Knapton (Canandaigua, NY) and junior midfielder Patrick White (Milton, MA) each had a goal and two assists.

The Leopards were led offensively by Chris Guilherme (Derry, NH) with two goals and an assist, while Jeff Guilherme tallied a pair of goals.

Junior midfielder Mike Swenson (East Lyme, CT) picked up a game-high seven ground balls for Wentworth.

The Golden Bears held a 45-28 shot advantage and a 47-30 ground ball advantage.

Western New England returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 23) at 4:00 p.m. to close out regular season play in a highly anticipated match-up against #16 Endicott. The Gulls (11-3, 8-0) are the only other unbeaten team in conference and will travel to Roger Williams on Wednesday (Apr. 20).
