BOSTON, Mass. – The Western New England women's tennis team defeated Wentworth 8-1 to earn its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 17). The Golden Bears are now 1-2, which is their same mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
Coach
Jenn Kolins' squad captured all three doubles and the first three singles matches to secure the win.
Seniors
Caitlin Hughes (Springfield, MA) and
Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, MA) started things with an 8-3 decision at number one doubles. Hughes went on to win her number two singles flight without losing a set while DeSimone posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at number three singles.
Senior
Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, MA) had a similar 6-3, 6-2 win at the top singles position and teamed with senior
Lori Pagliano (Milford, CT) for an exciting 9-8 (7-4 in the tie-breaker) victory at number two doubles.
Sophomore
Kelsey Grode (Fairview, PA) and freshman
Valerie Conway (Cumberland, RI) took the number three doubles outing with a 8-4 score. Conway also gained a well-earned 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-3 win at number six singles.
Also emerging victorious in a marathon match was junior
Alisha Lessard (Monroe, CT) 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 10-5 at number four singles.
The Leopards only point came when junior
Jillian Flynn (Billerica, MA) won the number five singles match.
Wentworth is now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
