Jeff Richardson (Simsbury, CT) picked-up his first win of the year as the Western New England baseball team opened its spring break trip with a 9-3 victory over RPI Friday (March 16).
The Golden Bears, ranked 18th nationally, banged out 11 hits in raising their record to 3-1. The Engineers drop to 3-6.
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI double by junior first baseman
Chuck Erickson (Mansfield, MA) who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Western New England scored five times in the fourth with a two-run single by sophomore first baseman
Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY) the big hit.
The Engineers closed the gap to 5-3 after scoring twice in the fifth before the Golden Bears added four runs in the bottom of the frame. Rubino knocked in a run with a single and senior designated hitter
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) drove in two runs with a double.
Richardson went five-and-two-third innings allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks with six strikeouts. Sophomore
Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) gave up a hit and had a strikeout in two-and-a-third innings.
Senior
Dan Duval (Middleton, MA) (0-3) took the loss for RPI.
