WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior left fielder
Matt Beyer (Janesville, FL) led off the top of the ninth with a homer to lead the Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team to a wild 11-10 victory over Western New England Thursday (Mar. 22) in a battle of two nationally-ranked programs at Chain of Lakes Park.
The teams also met last year in the NCAA Division III College World Series with the Warhawks winning by the score of 8-3.
Wisconsin-Whitewater is ranked 15th in the D3Baseball.com poll while Western New England is 23rd.
The Golden Bears led 4-2 after the first inning, but trailed 7-4 in the fourth before cutting the lead to two with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Western New England (5-5) used a five-run sixth inning to take a 10-7 advantage, but couldn't hold the lead.
UWW (4-2) got a run back in the seventh and tied the contest with a pair of runs in the eighth before Beyer's deciding it.
The Golden Bears hurt themselves by making three errors that led to five unearned runs.
Freshman first baseman
Marty Herum (River Falls, WI) had three (including a double) with two runs and four RBI. Senior designated hitter
Samuel Keller Jr. (Milwaukee, WI) also collected three hits and knocked in two runs while scoring once.
Senior
Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac, WI) picked-up the win in relief allowing only one hits with a walk and four strikeouts in two-and-a-third innings.
The Golden Bears had another strong hitting performance with 13 hits as five players had multi-hit outings.
Junior left fielder
Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI. He also led off the fourth with a first career homer.
Senior designated hitter
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA), junior right fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT), junior second baseman
Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA), and sophomore center fielder
Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) each contributed two hits while combining for five runs and three runs-batted-in.
Senior
Mike Lawlor (Windsor, CT) allowed the winning hit in suffering his first loss of the season.
