Western New England ends its Florida swing with an 8-1 loss to Southern Maine Huskies

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Western New England baseball team ended its Florida trip with an 8-1 loss to Southern Maine Friday (Mar. 23) at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Golden Bears, who were 3-5 during their spring break visit to the Sunshine State, are now 5-6.

Senior right-hander Ben Ives (Portland, MA) hurled a complete game nine-hitter for the Huskies who are now 6-3. He allowed nine hits (all singles) with no walks and four strikeouts in keeping his record perfect at 4-0.

Western New England tallied its only run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by junior third baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT). He finished with two hits along with junior second baseman Tim Clark (Springfield, MA), and sophomore first baseman Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY).

The Golden Bears used five pitchers with junior starter Kevin Jefferies (Cheshire, CT) (0-2) taking the loss.

Junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, ME) led the Huskies' 10-hit attack with a single, triple and three RBI.  Classmate Tucker White (Deerfield, NH) had two hits and scored three runs, and sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, ME) chipped in a single, double and run scored.
           
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Jake Glauser (Goffstown, NH) belted his first collegiate homer, then added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to open up a 6-0 advantage.

Western New England will open its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday (Mar. 25) against Salve Regina in Newport, Rhode Island.
