SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) had four hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Western New England baseball team to a 10-1 non-conference victory over local rival Springfield Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 28) at SC's Berry-Allen Field.
This was the third straight win for the Golden Bears who are now 8-6 while the Pride falls to 8-5.
Western New England took command by taking a 6-0 lead before breaking things open with four runs in the ninth inning. The Golden Bears pounded out 16 hits off four SC pitchers.
Sophomore first baseman
Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY) continued his fine play with a single, double, three runs scored, and two RBI.
Junior right fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) also singled and doubled, and knocked in theee runs.
Junior second baseman
Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) and junior third baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) each added two hits with Clark also having a pair of RBI.
Sophomore
Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) gained his third win without a loss by pitching four-and-two-thirds innings of relief. He allowed only three runs and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.
For Springfield, sophomore third baseman
Frank Calabrese (E. Longmeadow, MA) and senior second baseman
Mike Corletta (Westtown, NY) each had two hits. Corletta drove in the Pride's only run in the eighth.
Sophomore right-hander
Eric Chase (Vernon, CT) (1-2) was the losing pitcher.
