SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England baseball team ran its winning streak to eight games after sweeping Endicott 14-6 and 7-2 Sunday (Apr. 1) at Trelease Park.
This was rematch of last year's championship series of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament won by the Golden Bears by identical 5-4 scores.
Junior right fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) and junior second baseman
Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) each had five hits in the twin bill as WNE raised its record to 13-6 while staying perfect in the conference at 6-0. The Gulls are 5-3 in the CCC and fall under the .500 mark at 10-11.
Game 1 – Western New England 14, Endicott 6
The Golden Bears broke a 4-4 tie with 10 runs in the third inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Anthonis who also singled and doubled in the game. He scored two runs as did junior shortstop
Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) who had two doubles with two RBI. Senior catcher
Tyler Issadore (Hingham, MA) contributed two hits, two runs scored, and three runs-batted-in. Clark chipped-in with a single, double, run, and RBI.
Sophomore
Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) pitched six innings giving up nine hits and five runs with no walks and five strikeouts. He is now 4-0 this season.
Endicott sophomore shortstop
EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, NY) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, and RBI. Senior designated hitter
Daniel Mello (Peabody, MA) added a single, double, run, and a pair of runs-batted-in. The Gulls used four pitchers with junior reliever
Tyler Hitchcock (Abington, MA) (1-3) taking the loss.
Game 2 – Western New England 7, Endicott 2
Clark continued his hot hitting by collecting three singles to cap a 10-hit weekend (he also had five hits in a doubleheader sweep over Nichols on Saturday). The big hit of the game was a grand slam homer by McKelvey on a 3-and-2 count with two outs in the third inning. The Golden Bears added three runs in the fourth as junior left fielder
Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT) knocked in two runs with a two-out single. He finished with two hits along with Anthonis who again scored twice.
Junior
Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) won his first game of the season in three decisions after pitching five strong innings allowing just five hits and both runs while walking one batter and striking out eight.
The Gulls scored both their runs in the fifth on triples by freshman third baseman
Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, MA) and senior right fielder
Michael Russo (Natick, MA), and a single by sophomore pinch-hitter
Taylor English (Barre, VT). Junior
Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, MA) (12) took the loss.
