Western New England downs Nor'easters 14-5 to take over the top spot in the conference

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Western New England men's lacrosse team moved into sole possession of first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a 14-5 victory over the University of New England Saturday (Apr. 14) at Big Blue Turf.

The Golden Bears upped their record to 7-3 overall and stayed perfect in the conference with a 4-0 mark. The Nor'easters are now 8-7 and 3-3 in CCC action.

Western New England entered the day tied with Endicott for the top spot in the conference, but the Gulls fell to Roger Williams 11-7 Saturday.

Senior midfielder Patrick White (Milton, MA) and sophomore midfielder Sean Lawton (Abington, MA) each scored three for the 19th-ranked WNE squad. Senior midfielder Liam Bokanovich (Sandwich, MA) contributed a pair of goals.

UNE dominated action early jumping to a 2-0 lead and holding a 3-2 advantage after the opening period.

Western New England gained controlled with six goals in the second quarter (including two by White and Bokanovich) to take an 8-3 lead at the break. The Golden Bears outscored their hosts 4-1 in the third stanza for a comfortable 12-4 margin.

A key was the WNE defense, which kept the Nor'easters off the board for a stretch of 26 minutes, 44 seconds.

Senior midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) captured nine-of-12 face-offs and picked-up eight ground balls. Freshman goalie Brandon Body (Newtown, CT) compiled five saves filling in for injured senior starter Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT).

Also for Western New England, sophomore attacker Owen Caruso (Port Washington, NY) and sophomore midfielder Troy Powell (Ledyard, CT) each added a goal and assist.

Senior midfielder Nick Jez (Somers, CT) and sophomore midfielder Colton Craig (Gales Ferry, CT) both chipped-in with two assists.

Senior attacker Dylan Thomas (Mount Pleasant, NY) led UNE with two goals. Freshman midfielder Shamus Higginbottom (New Milford, CT) notched a goal and assist. Senior goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, MA) stopped 10 stops.
