Western New England beats Roger Williams twice to maintain top spot in conference

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Western New England baseball team continued its impressive hitting by banging out 32 hits in sweeping a doubleheader 7-0 and 15-6 over host Roger Williams Saturday (Apr. 21) at Paolino Field.

The Golden Bears raised their record to 23-9 overall and maintained their top spot in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with an11-1 mark. Thehawks are now 10-24 and 5-9 in CCC play.

Game 1 – Western New England 7, Roger Williams 0

Junior Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) and Mike Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) combined on a 10-hit shutout. Jefferies went the first three innings allowing two hits with three walks and a strikeout. Lospinuso went the final four frames giving up eight hits and strikeout out five. He is now 4-1.

Junior shortstop Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) led the 12-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with three runs-batted-in.

Sophomore center fielder Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) had two hits, scored twice, and stole a pair of bases. Junior right fielder Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) also had two hits.

Senior first baseman Trevor Manzi (Beverly, MA) had two hits for the Hawks. Sophomore Sean Doyle (Arlington, MA) (4-4) took the loss.

Game 2 – Western New England 15, Roger Williams 6

The Golden Bears scored nine runs in the second inning and four in the third inning after the Hawks went ahead 3-0 in the first.

WNE finished with 20 hits as junior left fielder Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT) went 4-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI.

Junior second baseman Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) and junior third baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) both collected three hits (including a double) with two runs scored. Clark, who now has a 20-game hitting streak, also drove in three runs.

Anthonis and senior designated hitter Mike Taylor (Hingham, MA) added two hits apiece with a walk.

Sophomore Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) improved to 5-1 after going give innings allowing six hits with four runs (two earned). He walked three and fanned four.

Manzi and sophomore left fielder Mike Pascarella (Milford, CT) each collected two hits for the Hawks.  Sophomore Trevor Sybertz (Chestnut Hills, MA) belted a two-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth. Sophomore Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, CT) (0-3) suffered the loss.
