SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England baseball team gained the top seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship by sweeping Eastern Nazarene 7-2 and 16-0 Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 25) at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears also ran their winning streak to 10 games while raising their record to 26-9 and 13-1 in conference play.
Coach
Matt LaBranche's team has four contests remaining in the regular season, including a CCC doubleheader at Gordon on Saturday (Apr. 30). Endicott and Curry are tied for second in the conference with 10-4 marks entering weekend play.
Eastern Nazarene falls to 6-30 and 2-14 in conference action.
Game 1 – Western New England 7, Eastern Nazarene 2
Freshman pitcher
Trevor Breton (Enfield, CT) raised his record to 6-1 after allowing five hits with a walk. He also compiled a season high 10 strikeouts.
Junior third baseman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) singled, doubled, tripled, and knocked in three runs.
Sophomore center fielder
Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) had a pair of singles, walk, two runs scored, a RBI, and three stolen bases. Junior right fielder
Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) added a run-scoring triple and scored twice.
The Golden Bears led 4-1 after three innings and added single runs in the next three frames to put the game out of reach.
Senior catcher
George Williams (Thornwood, NY) knocked in both Lions' runs with a double in the second and single in the seventh. Senior
Steve Doyle (Weymouth, MA) (1-6) was the losing pitcher.
Game 2 – Western New England 16, Eastern Nazarene 0
Junior second baseman
Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) smacked three triples while Schult contributed a single and double. Both players scored twice and knocked in three runs.
Anthonis, senior designated hitter
Mike Taylor (Andover, MA), and freshman first baseman
Steve Buckley (Monroe, CT) each had two hits and scored two runs. Anthonis and Buckley also chipped-in with two RBI apiece.
Senior pitcher
Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) went five innings and gave up only one hit with two walks and six strikeouts in remaining unbeaten at 4-0.
Western New England used a five-run second inning and six-run fifth to cruise to the victory.
Eastern Nazarene had only two hits, a single by Doyle (who played third) in the fourth and a double by senior first base player
Danny Rodriquez (Bronx, NY) in the seventh. Sophomore
Anthony Berroa (Teaneck, NJ) (0-8) suffered the defeat.
