SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  – In a battle of nationally-ranked men's lacrosse programs, No. 15 Springfield defeated No. 16 Western New England 10-5 in a battle of city rivals Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 25) at SC's Stagg Field.

Senior midfielder Shane Ferguson (Mamaroneck, NY) netted four goals with two assists for the Pride who improved its record to 11-4. The Golden Bears now have a 10-4 mark.

Springfield jumped to a quick 4-0 lead just 7:35 into the game as Ferguson had a goal and assist in that span.

WNE freshman goalie Brandon Body (Newtown, CT), who did a great job when starter Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) was out with an injury, was lifted after making only one save and replaced by Knowlton who went on to make eight saves.

The Golden Bears pulled within 5-3 at the break when senior midfielder Nick Jez (Somers, CT) scored at the 8:51 mark and sophomore midfielder Sean Lawton (Abington, MA) found the net with 18 seconds left in the second quarter. Ferguson, however, notched the first two goals of the third period and senior midfielder Tyler O'Keefe (Concord, NH) fired in a goal to give the hosts an 8-3 advantage with 3:40 to play in the stanza.

Senior midfielder Andrew Mariani (East Brunswick, NJ), senior attacker Patrick White (Milton, MA), and junior midfielder James Reardon (Longmeadow, MA) had the other goals for Western New England. Reardon also contributed an assist.

Senior midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) captured 10-of-16 face-offs and picked-up six ground balls.

Springfield received two goals each from senior midfielders Mike Delia (Wading River, NY) (who also had an assist) and Eric Balslov (Mt. Sinai, NY). Senior defender Tim Cimini (West Hartford, CT) chipped-in with a goal and nine assists.

Sophomore goalie Robert Maher (Katonah, NY) compiled 16 saves in a nice performance with six stops coming in the final period.

Western New England finished with a 37-31 advantage in shots.

This was the final game of the regular season for the Golden Bears who will host a semifinal round game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship next Wednesday (May 2) against an opponent to be determined.
