WENHAM, Mass. - The Western New England baseball team completed an outstanding season in the Commonwealth Coast Conference by sweeping host Gordon 6-0 and 4-2 in 10 innings Saturday afternoon (Apr. 28).

The Golden Bears raised their record to 28-10 and finished first in the conference with an impressive 15-1 ledger. The Fighting Scots fall to 14-23 and 7-9 in league play.

WNE ends its regular season at 3:00 p.m. Monday (Apr. 30) against Babson and opens defense of its CCC Championship as the top seed against sixth-seeded Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (May 3) in the double elimination event.

Game 1 – Western New England 6, Gordon 0

Sophomore Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) pitched a three-hit shutout allowing no walks and striking out three to improve his record to 6-1.

The game was scoreless until the Golden Bears scored twice in the sixth on a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, NY) and run-scoring double by junior second baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, CT).

Western New England broke the game open with four runs in the seventh when junior catcher Tom Booth (Milford, CT), Ambrosino, and Rubino delivered runs-scoring singles. The other run scored on an error.

Sophomore center fielder Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, NY) added a single and double. Senior designated hitter Mike Taylor (Andover, MA) had a hit and two runs scored.

Junior second baseman Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA) had his 24-game hitting streak ended after going 0-4.

Gordon sophomore Ryan Reinsel (Hudson, OH) did a nice job holding the Golden Bears to only two hits in four-and-a-third innings. He walked five and fanned three. Junior Brian Harrington (Shoreham, NY) took the loss in relief.

Game 2 – Western New England 4, Gordon 2 (10 innings)

In their first extra game of the season, the Golden Bears escaped an upset bid by the Fighting Scots when junior left fielder Matt Anthonis (Guilford, CT) and Taylor came through with clutch run-scoring singles in the 10th inning.

WNE went ahead 1-0 in the third when Schult singled, stole second, and came home on a single by Rubino.

Gordon took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when junior pitcher Ben Davidson (Sterling, MA) had a RBI single. The other run scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Bears tied the contest in the fifth on a walk by Schult who advanced to third on a double by Ambrosino, and scored on Rubino's groundout. Ambrosino again had his second straight two-hit performance.

Junior Jeff Richardson (Simsbury, CT) had an effective outing by going seven innings allowing just four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Senior Mark DiTommaso (Hebron, CT) gave up only one hit and had five strikeouts in three innings to gain his fifth victory of the year without a loss.

Davidson had a solid outing as well permitting five hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Jacob Syed (Niskayuna, NY) (1-3) suffered the loss.
