Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Visiting Western New England University scored the first goal of the game on Saturday at Curry College, but the Colonels came back with a second-half marker as the two Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer programs settled for a 1-1 draw in double overtime at Walter M. Katz Field. The Golden Bears are now 9-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the CCC, while the Colonels stand at 6-9-2 on the season and 1-6-1 in conference play.
Freshman
Katelyn Cummings put WNE on the board in the 25th minute when her corner kick sailed over the head of CC keeper Hayley Lorge and directly into the back of the net. It marked Cummings' first career collegiate goal.
The Golden Bears led 1-0 at halftime with each team getting seven shots; WNE had five corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
The Colonels had their chances to tie it before half-time but the Golden Bears sophomore goaltender
Briana Kubik came up with big stops to hold Curry scoreless.
Curry came out strong to begin the second half by pressuring WNE's defense and landing solid shots on net forcing Kubik to make more huge saves. The Colonels, however, were awarded a corner kick in the 56th minute when sophomore midfielder Felicia Vieira scored on a corner kick much like Cummings in the first half. Kubik got a touch on the ball but wasn't able to make the catch for the save.
Curry almost won it in regulation in the 89th minute, but Brittney McLaughlin's shot hit the post before Kubik saved Vieira's rebound attempt 24 seconds later.
The teams played hard during both 10-minute extra sessions. With the wind blowing hard, a lot of the shots on goal were taken outside the 18-yard box. Both keepers were focused and determined to make the saves.
Curry finished with 21 shots, 13 on net, four corners and five fouls. Western New England ended with 16 shots, 11 on net, six corners and 11 fouls.ÂÂ
Kubik finished with 12 saves and Lorge made 10.
The Colonels will host conference opponent Nichols College on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. match, while WNE entertains CCC foe Roger Williams University on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game. It's the regular season finales for all four squads.
