Golden Bears Advance to CCC Title Game on Jake Bartnik's Game-Winning Goal

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior Jake Bartnik scored the game-winning goal with 1 minute and 30 seconds left in the second overtime to lift Western New England to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over visiting Nichols in the semifinals of the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Tuesday at Suprenant Field.

The second-seeded Golden Bears improve to 14-4-3 on the season with their third consecutive win. They will host Roger Williams at 1 p.m. Saturday in the CCC title game, by virtue of the No. 5 seed Hawks upsetting regular-season champion Gordon in today's other semifinal, also a 2-1 overtime result. The No. 3-seed Bison, meanwhile, end their season at 12-2-5.

Bartnik netted his team-leading 11th goal to extend his career high after receiving a touch-pass from freshman Kory Caster through a lot of traffic right in front of the net and then he calmly kicked a left-footed strike inside the right post for his eighth game-winning goal of 2013.

Freshman Ryan Dickinson almost won it for WNE in the 104 minute when his shot missed just wide to the right after receiving a centering pass from Bartnik from the left.

Nichols had the first good opportunity to win in overtime as Tiago Prazeres broke away from the defense, but his chip-shot went wide left in the 94th minute.

The teams went to the two 10-minute extra sessions because Chad Burke got the equalizer for the Golden Bears in the 53rd minute. Colin Macdonald sent a cross into the box from the right wing to a waiting Burke, who rifled his second goal into the right-side netting for a 1-1 tie.

Senior co-captain Domenick Villano made six saves to help refocus the Golden Bears defense, including two key stops. In the 28th minute, senior Fred Willard controlled a loose ball at the end of the box and sent a shot through traffic which Villano kept out with a diving save to his left to keep the WNE deficit at one entering halftime. Then in the 86th minute, senior Pat Gaumond targeted a header to the upper right-corner of the net before Villano made a spectacular diving save to his left.

The Bison caught the WNE defense off guard with a goal only 33 seconds into the game off the foot of senior Scott Palmerino, who scored his team-best 10th of the season on an assist by Prazeres. Palmerino fired a shot into the lower-right of the frame, snapping WNE's 380-minute streak without allowing a goal to a CCC opponent.

Western New England had two solid looks at the goal in the second half. In the 63rd minute, senior co-captain and CCC Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Parma took a free kick with the wind at his back from near mid-field that made Bison keeper Jeremy Nash jump backwards to knock away and keep the match knotted 1-1. Then with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, senior Ryan Williams dribbled down the right side of the field, got by a diving Nash and crossed the ball at the mouth of an empty net where senior Justin Lind made a sliding kick save.

The Bison held a slim 15-12 shots advantage and led 6-4 in corner kicks.

For Western New England, it was a day of redemption: denying the Bison their fourth-straight CCC championship appearance, defeating a Nichols squad ranked higher in the NSCAA New England poll (No. 8 over 7), and avenging last season's conference playoff loss...also by a 2-1 overtime score in Dudley.

Western New England shut out Roger Williams 3-0 in the teams' last meeting last Tuesday in Springfield during the regular-season finale.
