Taylor Perun connected on his first home run of the season to highlight No. 15-ranked Western New England's 9-7 non-conference baseball victory Friday over top-ranked SUNY Cortland in the RussMatt Invitational.
The Golden Bears improve to 3-1 on the season after downing the No. 1 team in the nation for the third time under the guidance of head coach Matt LaBranche. The Red Dragons drop to 9-3 before coming back to down Rowan, 12-8, later in the day.
P.J. Rinaldi paced Cortland's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-5 at the plate, followed by Zack Graczyk, John Adornetto and Max Rosing with two apiece. Rosing had two runs batted in.

Steve Ambrosino chipped in two hits each for WNE.
After the Red Dragons drew first blood on a double-steal of home in the bottom of the first inning, Western New England tied it in the third on a fielding error.
In the next frame, the Golden Bears took advantage of more Cortland miscues by scoring two runs and taking the lead for good, 3-1.
Then in the fifth, Perun hit a two-run blast over the left field fence to cap a four-run frame for the Golden Bears, who were cruising 7-1 at that point.
