SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Sophomore
Jon Bota notched career highs of five goals and six points to lead all scorers as the Western New England University men's lacrosse team scored early and often in a 20-4 rout of visiting University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday. The Golden Bears up their record to 7-5 on the season, including 5-0 in the league, while the Nor'easters slip to 9-4 and 3-2 in the CCC.
Western New England made the most of Senior Day with the convincing victory, coming out on fire from the opening faceoff by scoring a mere seven seconds into the game on Bota's first goal of the afternoon--just two seconds shy off a NCAA Division III record held by WNE current assistant coach
Joe Martin. Before a minute had gone by, the Golden Bears added two additional goals by junior
Sean Lawton and senior
Corey Johnson's first of the year and led 3-0. Western New England set the tone early with three goals in a span of 49 seconds, but the NCAA record book doesn't have an entry for fastest three goals by the same team.
Prior to the game, the program's senior class of
James Reardon,
Corbett Corrigan Harreys,
Nick Jez, Johnson,
Philip McLean,
Brian Leistikow,
Anthony Bankers,
Mike Saccomani,
Zach Robinson,
Ryan Marcus,
Rylan Gilley,

Scott Lewis were honored for their contributions.
At the end of the first half, WNE led by a score of 12-1 and dominated every facet of the game. The Golden Bears held advantages in shots (39-33), shots on goal (29-16), ground balls (41-27) and face-off wins (17-11).
The Golden Bears didn't slow down much in the second half. The Nor'easters were outscored 5-1 in the third quarter, before adding two goals late in the fourth to make the final tally 20-4.
The Golden Bears got offensive contributions from a wide variety of players, including Bota as well as attackers junior
Adam Knapton (2 goals, 3 assists), junior
Owen Caruso (2 goals, 1 assist) and Lawton (2 goals, 2 assists). Johnson was one of three Golden Bears with four ground balls, and sophomore goalkeeper
Brandon Body recorded 10 saves in three periods of work, getting his seventh win of the season.
The Nor'easters employed a different goal scorer for each of their tallies: Pat Wolfe, Geoff Bruno, Nick Gross and Fritz Kleinhempel.
Although Saturday's contest was Senior Day for the Golden Bears, they still have one home game remaining. Western New England will host Endicott on Wednesday, April 24 in their final regular-season game of 2013.
