Golden Bears Put Scare into Top-Ranked and Overall No. 1 Seed Cortland in NCAA Play

Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y.--Western New England trailed top-ranked Cortland 5-4 at halftime, but the host Red Dragons outscored the Golden Bears 7-3 in the second half to take a 12-7 victory Wednesday evening in NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal action at Red Dragon Stadium.

With the win, Cortland--the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament--will play RIT in the National Semifinals in Philadelphia. The Golden Bears end their season at 13-7.

Sophomore Jon Bota paced the WNE offense with three points, while senior Ryan Marcus and junior Adam Knapton added two goals apiece.

Benjamin Dunlavey and Mike Cummings each scored twice, and Cody Consul added a goal and two assists for Cortland. The Red Dragons showed their depth as 12 players recorded at least one point, including 10 goal scorers.

Sophomore goalie Brandon Body did his part to try to keep WNE close, finishing with 14 saves. Cortland pounded the Golden Bears cage with 53 shots, of which 26 were on goal.

The Red Dragons jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, including winning the opening face-off and scoring 10 seconds into the game. Dunlavey scored twice and Patrick Brown found the back of the net as well.

But the Golden Bears wouldn't go away and responded with a three-goal run of its own. Bota fed Knapton and Sean Lawton at 6:15 and 3:58 on the clock, respectively, and then he scored himself with 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Marcus tied it up at 5-all with just 41 seconds gone in the third until Cortland went ahead for good on a Brandon Mulholland tally at the 9:23 mark.

Cortland turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, creating turnovers and taking control of possession. Overall, the Red Dragons had 43 ground balls to WNE's 30.

Leading 7-6, Cortland sealed the win by scoring five of the game's last six goals.

In April, Western New England lost 16-5 at Cortland.
