HARTFORD, Conn.--The New Year started for the Western New England University men's hockey team on Saturday evening at Trinity College, and it's a result the Golden Bears would like to soon forget.

The host Bantams scored four goals in the first period en route to a 10-1 non-conference victory, pinning the worst loss since Coach Greg Heffernan took over the WNE program for the 2009-10 campaign. Trinity improves to 7-2 on the season while the Golden Bears fall to 7-4.

Junior defenseman Michael Darrar and senior assistant captain John Kelly teamed up for the Golden Bears' lone goal to begin the scoring at the 4:00 mark of the second period. With WNE on the power play, Darrar took a feed from Kelly and deposited his second goal of the season past Benjamin Coulthard.

Western New England skated with Trinity 5-on-5, allowing just one goal through two periods in those situations. The Bantams, however, took advantage of 13 WNE penalties totaling 26 minutes and scored six power-play goals in eight opportunities.

Jackson Brewer powered the Trinity offense with three goals among four points, and Ryan Cole had four assists. Greg Rooney chipped in a short-handed goal in the third period for the junior defenseman's first career tally.

Coulthard got the win after stopping 19 shots in 40 minutes of action, and Nathaniel Heilbron made seven saves in the third period off the Bantams bench.

Trinity outshot WNE 50-27.

Western New England returns to Smead Rink action on Tuesday when it hosts non-conference foe Framingham State at 7:40 p.m.
