SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--It took two extra periods to decide the outcome between Commonwealth Coast Conference rivals Endicott and Western New England, but the men's soccer teams settled on a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Suprenant Field. The visiting Gulls are now 6-6-2 on the season and 1-2-2 in the conference, while the Golden Bears are now 7-6-2 overall, 1-3-1 in CCC play.
The Golden Bears had a total of 14 shots, putting only five on goal while the Gulls had 24 shots for four on goal.
The first half ended tied at 0-0 but in the 66th minute freshman
Jordan Martins broke the defensive battle. Sophomore
Scott Trautwein was able to pick up a loose ball and dish it to fellow classmate
Ryan Dickinson who drove down the right wing. A Gulls defender was able to poke the ball away from Dickinson. Trautwein collected the loose ball and was able to pass it to Martins, who buried the pass with his right foot past Gulls goalkeeper Alex Jorge in the lower-left hand corner of the net. Martins has two goals this season.
Western New England held the slim 1-0 lead all the way up until the 87th minute when Diego Slobotzky was able to pounce on a loose ball on a failed clear by the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears were not able to clear a corner kick and Slobotzky was in the right position at the right time to get a shot past Golden Bears sophomore goalkeeper
Kevin Strobel, who finished with four saves.
The Golden Bears and Gulls were equal on corner kicks with five.
Jorge ended up with five saves for the Gulls
The Golden Bears are next in action on Wednesday at Worcester State for a non-conference match.
