Nor'easters Clip Golden Bears on Second-Half Goal by Matthew Christie, 1-0

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Despite outshooting University of New England 13 to 12 for the contest, host Western New England University was on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action at Suprenant Field on Saturday. The Nor'easters improve to 6-3-1 overall, including 2-2 in the CCC, while the Golden Bears fall to 7-6-1 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

Matthew Christie scored the lone goal in the 64th minute on an assist from Tyler Garnick. Christie scored his second of the year from 6 yards out on a header pass from Garnick into the lower right-hand corner past WNE goalkeeper Kevin Strobel. Strobel finished with three saves.

The Golden Bears were able to put seven of 13 shots on frame but couldn't figure out a way to beat the Nor'easters goalkeeper Aidan McParland (7 saves). Freshman Logan Pingree came off the bench to lead WNE with three, followed by classmate Connor Rubin and sophomores Ryan Dickinson, Brandon Bolger with two apiece.

Controlling possession and tempo for much of the match, the Golden Bears had plenty of opportunities to attempt to tie the game but couldn't force overtime. Sophomore Adam Goncalves put a ball into the 18-yard box where four Golden Bears converged but were unable to capitalize on the service. In the first half, sophomore Neil Williams had an attempt to put the Golden Bears up early but missed a shot high from about 18 yards out.

Western New England had 13 total shots with seven on goal. The Nor'easters were able to fire 12 shots while putting four on goal.

The Golden Bears had the advantage on corner kicks by a slim margin of 5 to 4. The game had 20 total fouls--14 by the Nor'easters and six for the Golden Bears.

Western New England is next in action a full week from today on the 11th against CCC rival Endicott at 11 a.m. at Suprenant Field.
