Golden Bears Clinch Final Commonwealth Coast Conference Playoff Berth as #6 Seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--On the final day of the regular season, the Western New England University women's tennis team clinched the final spot and sixth seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament with a thrilling 5-4 victory Sunday over visiting Wentworth at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. The Golden Bears won their last two regular-season matches to improve to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in the CCC, while the Leopards fall to 3-10 and 2-6 in the conference.

"Today's win was a culmination of work done both on and off the court this season," Western New England coach Jennifer Kolins said after the match. "This was the biggest win of our season, coming in the last match (before the postseason), which shows the focus that our players have sustained to reach the greatness that they have set to achieve."

Junior co-captain Kelly Byrnes accounted for two points with a No. 4 singles win over Emily Jodoin 6-2, 6-2, and teaming up with freshman Christina D'Agostino at No. 2 doubles victory against Nicole McColgan and Jodoin, 8-5.

With the Golden Bears already ahead, sophomore Joeanna Glantz clinched the outcome with a No. 2 singles triumph over McColgan, 6-4, 6-0. Classmate Corey St. Louis added some insurance with a No. 5 singles sweep of Laura Boyd, 6-1, 6-3.

Western New England had taken a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. Besides D'Agostino/Byrnes, the freshman tandem of Alice Mathews and Jessica Breitweg also won at No. 3 by cruising past Boyd/Nicole Mooney, 8-1. Caitlin Corcoran/Caitlyn Briggs picked up Wentworth's point by doubling up freshman Lauren Sell and Glantz, 8-4.

Wentworth won three close singles matches at Nos. 1, 3 and 6. Corcoran defeated Sell at the top spot 6-1, 7-5. Briggs edged D'Agostino in the middle of the lineup, 7-6 (4), 7-5 while Mooney outlasted senior co-captain Michele Magliulo, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 10-2 in a super-set tiebreaker.

Western New England will play at the No. 3 seed on Tuesday in the CCC Quarterfinals. The official pairings will be announced at a later time.
