CCC Quarterfinals Comeback Attempt Falls Shy at No. 2-Seed Gordon College, 4-2

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--The defending Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer champion Western New England University Golden Bears saw their 2014 campaign come to an end on Saturday in the CCC quarterfinals at No. 2-seeded Gordon College, 4-2, at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The seventh-seed Golden Bears finish at 10-8-3 overall with a 33-player roster comprised of 25 freshmen and sophomores.

Host Gordon used four different goal scorers in Evan Crocker, Ben Gradert, Caleb Cole and Andy Guthrie to build a commanding 4-0 lead in the first 49 minutes of action. John Schwien recorded two assists for the Fighting Scots. Crocker and Gradert scored just 55 seconds apart beginning in the 12th minute for a quick 2-0 advantage that Western New England was unable to overcome.

But the Golden Bears would use that youth movement and begin to look forward to the future by making things interesting with a pair of second-half goals to get back into the game. Connor Rubin was the spark WNE was looking for as the freshman came off the bench and chipped a ball over a diving Josh Spoonhour for his first collegiate goal and points in the 69th minute. Sophomore Alan Haberern pieced the play together and was credited with the assist.

Western New England crept closer in the 78th minute when freshman Logan Pingree flicked a ball with the outside of his foot that slow-hopped its way just inside the right post. The Golden Bears looked like they might have an incredible third goal in the 84th minute, but a throw-in went into the goal untouched and was disallowed by the referee.

Gordon outshot WNE by a 17-4 margin, including 11-0 in the first half. The Fighting Scots also had five of the six corner kicks in the contest.

The GC Fighting Scots (14-4-1 overall) move on to the semifinal round and will host third-seeded Roger Williams University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
