Box Score
QUINCY, Mass.--Senior Maleesa Santos scored on Eastern Nazarene's sixth shootout attempt to give the host Lions the right to advance to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals over Western New England on penalty kicks, 5-4. The teams traded goals in each half of regulation and the result officially goes into the record books as a 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
No. 6 seed Western New England proved its mettle against the third-seeded Lions--taking the season series at 1-0-1--but the Golden Bears end their postseason hopes with a 7-8-5 overall record. Eastern Nazarene, meanwhile, goes to 9-9-1 overall with the result and advances to the conference semifinal round where it will host Wentworth on Tuesday after the seventh-seeded Leopards upset second-seeded Endicott, 4-2, also on Saturday.
With the match ending in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes, the game headed to penalty kicks to decide which team would advance in the postseason. After each team sent five kick-takers to the spot, the score remained level at 4-4. Senior
Tayler Mazurski, juniors
Erica Parlavecchio,
Karoline Sperber and sophomore
Katelyn Cummings all converted for the visiting team, while Justine Buchanan, Katherine Lawrence, Hannah Scahill and Sam Williams did the same from the penalty spot for the home squad.
In the first head-to-head round, the Golden Bears'
Briana Kubik's attempt hit the crossbar and stayed out of the cage to give Eastern Nazarene an opportunity to win. Santos calmly strode to the spot and buried the "game-winner" to send the Lions into the semifinals.
Junior
Becca Mercieri gave WNE a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute before Scahill got the equalizer with only 6 minutes and 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Mercieri poked in a loose ball inside the six-yard box after the Lions' goalkeeper mishandled a cross from the left wing to notch her fourth score of the year. Scahill headed in a corner kick delivery from Jules Speno to collect her team-leading eight tally of the season.
Kubik, a first-team all-conference keeper, ended up with seven saves as the Lions outshot WNE, 20-6.
