Breton and Co. Bounce Back in Game Two to Salvage Split Versus Eastern Nazarene

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior Trevor Breton tossed a three-hitter as the Western New England baseball team defeated visiting Eastern Nazarene, 3-1, in the second game of a doubleheader after falling to the Lions in the opener, 4-3, at Trelease Memorial Park on Saturday. The Golden Bears now settle at 13-16-1 overall and 9-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Lions are now 11-13 and 3-9.

In going the distance, Breton struck out seven batters while allowing a walk and only three singles to improve to 4-1 on the season, lowering his earned-run average to 2.21.

Sophomore Chris Casey broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning with a double to the left-center gap, bringing home classmate Matt Calzone all the way from first base who had reached on a hit by a pitch.

Western New England tacked on an insurance run two frames later when Casey delivered again, this time with a RBI-single that plated freshman Daniel Morin from third base. Morin led off the fourth with a single to center field and advanced to third on Calzone's single down the right field line. It was Casey's second multi-run batted in game in as many starts.

Rocco Martinelli had a run-scoring single through the right side to give Eastern Nazarene a 1-0 lead in the first inning before senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino tied the game on a RBI-groundout in the bottom half.

In the opener, junior Matt Anziano and sophomore Doug Milne led WNE with two hits apiece.

Jeremy Wagner went 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Lions, who also received two hits by Anthony Berroa.

Western New England jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a double-steal of home by sophomore Kevin Marciano in the third inning (Ambrosino swiped second base on the play) and RBI-double to left-center field off Anziano's bat in the fourth.

But Eastern Nazarene tied it in the top of the fifth frame on a Jake Koch RBI-groundout and Wagner RBI-single to right-center.

Then the Lions scored two more runs in the next inning as Quentin Moore and David Manning had back-to-back RBI on a ground-out to second and sacrifice fly to left field, respectively, to seal the victory.

Sophomore Scott Hubener got WNE back within one, 4-3, in the sixth on a RBI-single to center field to bring home Casey who entered as a pinch-runner.

Eastern Nazarene starter Frank Fusco picked up the win (2-1) after allowing three runs (two earned) and eight hits through six innings. Doug English got his second save after retiring the side in order in the seventh.

Fifth-year senior Mike Lospinuso took the loss (3-4), pitching a complete game. He scattered eight hits while giving up four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.
