Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--Junior keeper
Briana Kubik made eight saves and the rest of the Western New England defense came up big in spite of a heavy shot disadvantage as the Golden Bears forged a scoreless draw against host Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action at Bayside Field on Saturday.
The Golden Bears now stand at 2-4-2 overall, but remain unbeaten at 1-0-1 in CCC play while completing their fourth overtime game in a row (a 1-1-2 record during that stretch). New England's 10th-ranked team according to the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional rankings, the Hawks are now 5-2-1 on the season and they are also 1-0-1 in the conference.
Roger Williams registered 27 shots including eight on frame. But the Golden Bears starting back line of senior captain
Gabrielle Bates and juniors
Jessica Burke,
Erica Parlavecchio as well as sophomore
Katelyn Cummings--along with Kubik--was equal to the task, keeping the Hawks outside and clearing dangerous chances.
The Roger Williams offense was in full attack mode all game, as the Hawks outshot the Golden Bears 27-3 over the course of the game, including holding WNE without a shot in either 10-minute overtime period.
One of the Hawks' best chances to score came with seconds to play in regulation. Taylor Provost just hooked a shot wide off of a corner kick with less than 15 seconds to play in the second half.
Junior
Emma Norden had WNE's only shot on goal in the 62nd minute. Sophomore
Samantha Emmert had another good opportunity later in the second half but her shot was blocked down by the Hawks defense with a minute to go.
Kubik collected her third shutout of the year to lower her goals-against average to 0.83, which is ranked second in the CCC. Sydney Martin earned her fifth clean sheet of the season, needing only one save, and leads the conference with a 0.55.
Next up for WNE is a non-conference date against crosstown foe Elms College at home on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Golden Bear Stadium. This will be a "homecoming" for Blazers second-year Sean Milbier '00 who played on the WNE men's soccer squad (1997-2000) and served as an assistant coach for current Golden Bears women's coach Ron Dias for several seasons. Western New England won at Elms, 2-0, in 2013 in the first meeting between the "pupil" and the "teacher."
Roger Williams will travel to Johnson & Wales University Monday for a 7 p.m. game.
