Golden Bears Topple First-Place Gordon College Behind Tayler Mazurski's Two Goals

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior Tayler Mazurski scored twice and junior keeper Briana Kubik made six saves to propel the host Western New England University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory Saturday over Commonwealth Coast Conference leader Gordon College at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears even their record to 4-4-2 and improve to 2-0-1 in the CCC for sole possession of first place (after Roger Williams and Endicott tied 1-1 today), while the Fighting Scots fall to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. This snaps a four-game losing streak in the series, gives Western New England its first win versus Gordon since Oct. 16, 2010 (1-0 in Springfield) and avenges last year's 5-0 defeat in Wenham.

Gordon, which is receiving votes in this week's New England region rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, pressured early in the game by getting several good scoring chances. Just 2 minutes and 20 seconds in, Hannah Midwinter had a point-blank shot that Kubik punched over the crossbar for Fighting Scots' corner kick. Then 34 seconds later, Kaitlyn Hawn's shot went wide right off the ensuing set play.

Following a couple good looks back-to-back for WNE that were blocked down by Sammi Morren, Midwinter redirected a header from six yards out that Kubik saved.

But the Golden Bears got the only goal they would need in the 35th minute when Mazurski had the ball a few yards away of the end line on the left and cut back to her right to get the right-footed shot past McKenzie Dion from a sharp angle. Junior Karoline Sperber was credited with an assist for feeding Mazurski down low.

Mazurksi added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute when she headed home her third goal of the season on assists by juniors Emma Norden and Sarah Marois. Marios sent a right-wing pass into the box where Norden collected it and passed it to Mazurksi, who finished with a header into the right-side netting. She now leads the Golden Bears with three goals and four assists for 10 total points.

Junior Becca Mercieri closed the scoring in the 74th minute with her first of the season on pass from classmate Alicia Lewis.

Gordon thought it had dented the scoresheet off a corner kick in the 79th minute, but the goal was disallowed. After the corner, the ball was temporarily cleared by the WNE defense but as a Gordon player shot the ball back into the scrum it deflected off a Golden Bear with a Fighting Scots player in the offside position. The referee went to the sideline to confer with his assistant referee and the decision was upheld.

Gordon had a slight edge in shots for the game, 10-9, but WNE turned the offensive tables in the second half by outshooting the visitors 6 to 3. The Fighting Scots took four of the five corner kicks.

Western New England's next game is out-of-conference at Wellesley College on Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m. Gordon hosts CCC rival Endicott on Saturday at noon.
