Wheaton Bests Western New England in Battle of NSCAA Regionally-Ranked Rivals, 2-0

Box Score NORTON, Mass.--Sophomore keeper Kevin Strobel registered a career-high eight saves on Wednesday, but visiting Western New England University came out on the short end of a 2-0 non-conference result at the hands of Wheaton College in a battle of regionally-ranked squads by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Golden Bears, who are 10th in New England, fall to 2-1 on the young season, while the fourth-ranked Lyons improve 3-0.

Strobel--the reigning defensive player of the week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (New England) and Commonwealth Coast Conference--saw his personal scoreless streak of 211 minutes and 25 seconds come to an end in the 29th minute when Luke Finkelstein staked WC to a 1-0 with a curling free kick into the corner from 20 yards out. Kevin Gil added an insurance goal in the 54th minute off a Travis Blair feed, deflecting a rebound across the line.

Despite getting outshot 26 to 9, Western New England had some good looks on frame. In the closing minutes of the first half, the Golden Bears generated four corner kicks and had shots by Maurice Young that was saved by WC goalie Matt Dickey, Adam Goncalves that was blocked down by the Lyons defense and another shot by Young that sailed high.

The Golden Bears also had good offensive pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game, getting four corner kicks and three of the last five shots, but weren't rewarded with a goal.

Western New England will travel to Oneonta, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday for the prestigious Mayor's Cup hosted by SUNY Oneonta. The Golden Bears will play Babson College at 1 p.m. in the opening game of the first round and then play the Oneonta/RIT winner at 1 or 4 p.m. on Saturday.
