Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.--Briana Kubik posted a career-best 16 saves and the Western New England defense notched its fifth shutout of the season as the Golden Bears forged a scoreless draw on the road at regionally-ranked Wellesley in a non-conference women's soccer game at the WC New Fields Complex on Tuesday. The Golden Bears, who have recorded three ties versus teams currently ranked in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III New England regional poll, are now 4-4-3 on the season while the No. 8-ranked Blue settle at 7-2-2.
Western New England was outshot 22 to 1, but Kubik and the defense didn't bend--coming up with save-after-save and clearing away numerous dangerous chances for Wellesley. After her performance today through 110 minutes between the posts, the junior keeper assumed first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference in goals-against average (0.67), save percentage (.910) and saves (71).ÂÂ
The Blue pressured immediately getting a pair of corner kicks and four shots that were each saved by Kubik in the first 7 minutes and 47 seconds after the opening kickoff.
Sophomore
Katelyn Cummings registered the Golden Bears' only shot of the contest in the 11th minute that was met by starting keeper Claire Cerda, who gave way to Kat Goldsmith for the second half and both overtimes.
Melise Knowles led Wellesley with five shots, including four on frame. Three of Abigail Hess' four shots came on goal.
After outshooting the Golden Bears 8-1 in the first half, the Blue kept the pressure on in the second half by recording 11 shots in the period and three more in the first 10-minute extra session.
The Blue's best chance came at the end of the first overtime period as Kyla Petrie l
aunched a free-kick attempt from just outside the penalty area over the outstretched arms of Kubik, but also just over the crossbar. Western New England, however, was equal to the task on each of the Blue's possessions.
Wellesley took 10 of the 11 corner kicks on the day.
The Golden Bears get back into CCC play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when they host
University of New England at Suprenant Field. Wellesley will now look to Saturday at 4 p.m. and a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match-up at Wheaton.(Editor's note: Wellesley Sports Information contributed to this game recap.)
