SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Led by junior co-captain
Kelly Byrnes, the Western New England women's tennis team doubled up on visiting Sage College, 6-3, in a non-conference match at the Volvo Outdoor Courts on Monday. The Golden Bears improve to 2-1 on the season while the Gators lost their third-straight to fall to 1-3.
Byrnes was victorious at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles. She teamed up with freshman
Christina D'Agostino to soundly defeat Kirsten Ackerman/Erin Duffy 8-1, and then won her singles match over Lauren Bendall 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, clinching the match for the Golden Bears by overcoming a tough 7-5 loss in the opening set.
Western New England led 2-1 after the doubles competition thanks to a No. 3 victory by the freshmen tandem of
Jessica Breitweg and
Alice Mathews over Alex Faas and Lindsey Tolman, 8-0.
The Golden Bears won four of the six singles flights. Besides Byrnes, sophomore
Joeanna Glantz won at No. 2, classmate
Corey St. Louis at No. 5 and senior co-captain
Michele Magliulo at No. 6. The latter was dominant in besting Tolman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
