SheetSPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior goalie
Tim Carr made 55 saves, which is believed to be three shy of the Western New England single-game record, but nationally-ranked Trinity College scored four times in the opening period en route to a 7-2 non-conference men's hockey victory over the host Golden Bears on Sunday evening at Smead Rink at Blunt Park. The No. 10 Bantams improve to 8-1-1 on the season while WNE falls to 1-9-1 after making its 2015 debut.
Sean Orlando led Trinity with three points, including two goals in the first period to help stake the Bantams to a 4-0 cushion. Sophomore Will Sleeper, who was making his season debut, tallied the first two goals of his two-game college career, including the second of two goals by the Bantams in a 15-second span with under a minute to play in the first.
Sophomore
Dane Genord got the Golden Bears on the scoreboard to open the second period, netting his fifth of the season to close the gap to 4-1. Junior
Chris Lembo assisted on the play.
The Bantams outshot WNE 62-24 for the contest, including a 28-7 margin in the first 20 minutes.
But Carr and the WNE defense tightened up for the next 36 minutes, allowing just one goal over that span.ÂÂ
In the third period, senior assistant captain
Michael Darrar got WNE back to within 5-2 with his second goal from the point on a feed from junior
Ryan Taylor at the 15:10 mark. The Bantams, however, put the game out of reach with goals by Anthony Sabitsky and Samuel Kane over the final 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Trinity went 2-for-5 on the power-play while WNE was scoreless in its two man-advantage opportunities.
Western New England will be at Framingham State on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt facing off at 7:30 p.m.
