Mike Jednak's First Career Hat Trick Leads Golden Bears Over Host Gordon, 15-9

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--Junior Mike Jednak registered his first career hat trick, and sophomore Justin Bard also netted three goals, as the Western New England University men's lacrosse team defeated host Gordon College, 15-9, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest on Tuesday at the Brigham Complex. The Golden Bears won their third-straight to up their record to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in the CCC, while the Fighting Scots fall to 4-8 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

Michael Utz paced Gordon with three goals and two assists, and Jake Martin added three goals and an assist.

After Utz gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead just 89 seconds into the contest, Bard ignited a five-goal outburst by the Golden Bears that included two while on the man-up to end the first quarter. Sophomore Frank Medlicott on the man-up, Jednak, senior Dan McKenna on the man-up and sophomore Max Berteletti (2 assists) also scored in the period.

Senior Jon Bota extended Western New England's advantage to 6-1 at the 12:10 mark of the second quarter on a pass from Berteletti. Utz tallied another unassisted goal before WNE went on another long scoring run, this time 5-1 to end the first half with a commanding 11-3 cushion. Bard scored twice during this stretch.

The teams did little scoring in the third quarter, but combined for three goals in a span of 1 minute and 51 seconds. Utz found the back of the cage again with a man-up tally at 11:02, followed by senior captain Garrett Mullins's second of two goals on the evening at 10:13 and junior Taylor Dubose on the man-up for the Golden Bears. Western New England led 13-4 after three quarters.

Gordon outscored WNE 5-2 in the final stanza, but it was not enough to rattle the three-time defending CCC champions.

For the contest, the Golden Bears also enjoyed statistical advantages in shots (36-28), shots on goal (29-18), ground balls (37-25), face-off wins (16-11), clears (13-for-15, 7-for-17) and man-up opportunities (3-for-4, 2-for-5).

Western New England face-off specialist and junior David Cedrone went 13-for-20 at the "X" and led all players with eight ground balls. In his second career start, freshman Nick Sisoian had a personal-record four ground balls. Senior goalie Brandon Body made eight saves and had five ground balls in 47:19 to earn the win.

Western New England returns home on Thursday to square off against crosstown rival Springfield College in a non-conference tilt at Golden Bear Stadium, beginning at 4 p.m.
