Third Quarter Surge Allows Golden Bears to Pull Away and Double Up Leopards, 20-9

Box Score BOSTON--Western New England University outscored host Wentworth Institute of Technology 8-0 in the third quarter to help the Golden Bears double up the Leopards, 20-9, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse contest on Wednesday at Sweeney Field. The Golden Bears (11-5 overall) finish the regular season with a 7-1 CCC record and they will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament that begins with quarterfinal action on Saturday. Wentworth finishes 9-7 on the season, 3-5 in the CCC.

Western New England senior Jon Bota tied a career high with five goals and set a personal record with eight total points to lead all scorers. Sophomore Justin Bard added four goals and five points, and classmate Keegan Dudeck matched him with five points including four assists.

Junior Alec Paradis paced Wentworth with three goals and three assists as well as four ground balls, and senior Ryan Coakley contributed four goals and five points.

The Golden Bears scored first with a goal from senior captain Garrett Mullins at 12:59. Wentworth took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals, first from Coakley at 4:55 and then senior Michael Cushera with 2:54 remaining. Western New England wrapped up the first quarter scoring with sophomore Michael Censorio at 2:31 and Bota scoring in the final two minutes.

Bota scored first to start the second quarter to put the visitors up 4-2. Paradis score three minutes in and Cushera followed up to tie the game at four. Western New England scored the next three goals, with Bard adding a pair. Coakley finished the first half scoring with 29 seconds remaining to make the score 7-5 at halftime. Coakley's marker gave him 79 points on the season, breaking Mark Castela's 1999 mark of 78, set in 1999.

Holding a slim 7-5 halftime lead, WNE broke the game open with eight goals in the second quarter while holding the Leopards to zero. Bard and Bota keyed the scoring outburst with two goals apiece. The Golden Bears led 15-5 after three.

After Bota scored to start the fourth, Paradis scored back-to-back goals with his first ending a 16:29 scoreless drought for Wentworth. Coakley added a pair in the fourth, and freshman Nicholas Beauchamp scored his first goal of the season. Wentworth was held scoreless in the final seven minutes, as the Golden Bears won by 11 goals.

Western New England was dominant at the X, winning 24 of 32 face-offs. Junior David Cedrone won 13-of-17 and picked up 10 ground balls while classmate Wade Modestow was 11-of-15 and picked up six ground balls.

Senior Brandon Body stopped four shots in 45 minutes to earn the win while freshman Adam Dufault made 10 saves for the Leopards.

Not only did the Golden Bears dominate the scoreboard, but the visitors also held huge advantages in most statistical areas: shots (37-25), shots on goal (30-14), ground balls (52-26), face-offs (24-8) and clears (14-for-15, 10-for-14).

Western New England will be the number two seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament and will receive a first-round bye, hosting a semifinal contest on Wednesday at Golden Bear Stadium. The start time will be announced at a later date.
