Golden Bears Blank Elmhurst 6-0 for Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

Morris, Mochak & Vigliotti turn in three scoreless innings each

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 23, 2018) –
The Western New England University baseball team improved to 5-1 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 6-0, shutout victory over Elmhurst (Ill.) College on Friday morning at Chain O' Lakes Stadium.

Top Performers
• Western New England's pitching trio of junior Jeremy Morris (Montrose, N.Y.), freshman Dalen Mochak (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Vigliotti (Verplanck, N.Y.) combined to blank the Blue Jays with three scoreless innings each. Morris got the start and earned his first career win, while Mochak turned in three hitless frames of relief. Vigliotti finished the job, getting the final nine outs to pick up his first career save.
• Senior Jared Rosenblatt (Avon, Conn.), junior Joe Cassella (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore Kevin Johnson (Waterford, Conn.) led the offense with two RBI each.

• Elmhurst sophomore catcher Colin Winston (Tinley Park, Ill.) reached base three times with a walk and two singles, while senior infielder Reagan McReynolds (Aurora, Ill.) went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Game Review
Western New England opened the scoring with three runs on three hits in bottom of the second inning.

Junior Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) led off with a single, and sophomore Zac Nussbaum (Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with another single before junior Brian Valeriano (Stratford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

After the next batter fouled out, Cassella drove in the game's first run with a fielder's choice, and two batters later Johnson produced a two-out, two-run single to center field.

Mochak came on in the fourth and retired the first six batters he faced in order. The Golden Bears went up 4-0 on a sacrifice fly by Rosenblatt in the bottom of the fifth, and Mochak escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth.

Another Rosenblatt sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 5-0, and Western New England capped the scoring the following inning on an RBI single by Cassella.

Notes
• The Golden Bears have won four straight games for the first time this season.
• Western New England turned three double plays in the contest, two of which were of the inning-ending variety.
• Junior shortstop Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.) extended his hitting streak to 13 games, dating back to last season's CCC Tournament.

Up Next
Western New England (7-3) will look to keep rolling tomorrow morning, when the Golden Bears take on St. Olaf (Minn.) College at 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
