How it Happened:
Western New England wasted little time to credit their first goal of the game against the Fighting Scots, who have allowed all of three goals in 11 total games this season prior to the start of today's game. Isabella Montalvo moved into the box two on one with teammate Allison Bruehwiler. Montalvo would lift a cross crease ball to the foot of Bruehwiler who tucked the ball into the net to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead. Bruehwiler adds to her team lead in goals, now crediting six on the season.
Very shortly after the goal from Western New England, the Fighting Scots would get three corner kicks in a row and take advantage of the final one as the Golden Bears were unable to clear the ball from inside the box. Gordon's Shelby Jones pounced on the loose ball inside the box and struck the ball into the back of the net to quickly tie the game at one. The goal comes two minutes and 48 seconds after Western New England tallied their first of the afternoon. The half would conclude with the even score, with the Fighting Scots and Golden Bears each scoring once and both taking four shots towards goal. Tori Paine would be the only goalkeeper to make a save in the half, as Molly McLaughlin saw just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes that fell into the goal.
The Golden Bears came out of the break hungry for the next goal to move back on top and that is exactly what they got as just four minutes and 23 seconds into the second half, WNE would seize opportunity. Lindsay Reidy took a shot towards net that Paine juggled around. Reidy would continue to pressure the Gordon goalkeeper and knocked the ball down and into the net to give Western New England the 2-1 lead.
Western New England would quickly fight for another goal, their third of the game just under four minutes after the Reidy tally. The Golden Bears were awarded with a throw in as took advantage of some offensive zone time. Allison Bruehwiler received the thrown in and dribbled past two defenders before giving the ball up to a streaking Autumn Hathaway who struck a laser on the ball into the goal to give WNE the three-goal lead. Hathaway nets her second goal of the season as Bruehwiler picks up her sixth assist of the season.
The game would remain close however, as Gordon College would push on offense to try and make the comeback. The Fighting Scots would tally in the 81st minute when Calla Ashely sent a ball into the middle of the box, finding Kendra Wentling, who took a shot into the top right corner of the net, to give the Fighting Scots just a 3-2 deficit. Molly McLaughlin would face two shots on goal after the tally from Wentling, denying Gordon the opportunity to get back into the game. Western New England's goalkeeper would come away with three saves in total, all three coming in the second half to preserve the win. Western New England would take the hard-fought battle 3-2.
