SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 9, 2021) – The Western New England women's soccer team saw one goal in the first 45 minutes of play but later exploded for five goals in a 25 minute span in the second half to light up the Colonels of Curry College 6-0 from Suprenant Field on Saturday afternoon.

  • Western New England: 7-5 (3-1 CCC)

How it Happened:

Western New England got the scoring party started early in the first half when Kristin Decost sent a ball across the box to the foot of teammate Samantha Vitka who cashed in on the opportunity, ripping a shot past GK Stella Schofield to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead. Vitka nets her second goal of the season and fifth career goal as a Golden Bear. Western New England would keep possession of the ball for the majority of the first half as Schofield was tested seven times in the opening half, coming away with six saves for Curry, Western New England and Curry would both take one corner kick apiece in the first half. GK Molly Mclaughlin made the start for WNE but was not forced to make a save in the first half with the Colonels putting just two shots up, neither on goal.

Vitka would strike again for Western New England in the second half of the game as in the 49th minute, the Gokden Bears were awarded one of their two corner kicks of the half. Autumn Hathaway sent the kick into the box, finding Vitka who punished the back of the net with her second goal of the game, doubling up Western New England's lead to 2-0. The Golden Bears would keep the pressure on Curry College, netting three goals in one minute and forty seconds.

Allison Bruehwiler took the ball down the right sideline as she went in two on one with a defender and Isabella MontalvoBruehwiler would sent a pass across and into the box, finding the foot of Montalvo, who let the ball deflect off herself and into the back of the cage, giving Western New England the quick 3-0 lead. After a mere 49 seconds had past, the duo for Bruehwiler to Montalvo would strike again in a near mirror goal as their first. Bruehwiler would send the ball into the box and Montalvo would be there to knock in the Golden Bears forth goal of the game.

One minute and six seconds after the second Montalvo goal, Bruehwiler would cook up a goal of her own. Bruehwiler saw the ball at her feet and took a flaring shot that was perfectly executed up and under the right crossbar and into the net, giving WNE the 5-0 lead. Bruehwiler would strike for her team leading fifth goal of the season, tied with teammate Isabella Montalvo for most on the team.

Western New England would cap off their scoring party in the 74th minute when Olivia Besthoff sent a ball into the box finding the foot of Jordan ParePare would see the ball bounce around before she was able to take a touch to her left, finding teammate Allyson Hill, who tucked the ball into the net to give the Golden Bears the big 6-0 lead. Western New England's defense wouldn't allow Curry College to get any momentum as they held the Colonels to just three shots in the second half, with one shot on goal handled by Molly McLaughlin. WNE would take the big 6-0 win from Suprenant Field.
