SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England jumped out to a 2-0 lead but visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 victory on Thursday at Smead Rink, supplanting the Golden Bears from first-place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey standings for the first time this season. With the win, the Leopards (9-7-1 overall, 5-2 ECAC Northeast) avenge a 3-2 home loss on Nov. 8 and take over sole possession of first place in the conference with 10 points--two ahead of WNE, Curry, Suffolk and Nichols.
Freshman
Chris Lembo and sophomore
Brandon Stroud staked the Golden Bears (7-11, 4-3) to a 2-0 lead. Lembo notched his third goal of the season with WNE on the power play at 13:57 of the first period and Stroud connected for his team-leading 11th tally at 6:49 of the second.
But 1 minute and 46 seconds later, Mike Domsodi scored the first of his two goals on the night as the Leopards cut the deficit in half while on the power play. Domsodi tied the game at 2 at the 14:39 mark of the second period and Sean McLaughlin scored the go-ahead goal--his first of the season--at 17:28.
Junior co-captain
Brian Prost recorded two assists to join Stroud with two points, who added an assist on Lembo's goal.
When Wentworth was whistled for a 2-minute slashing penalty with 1 minute and 6 seconds left in the game, WNE called timeout to set up its power play unit. Western New England coach Greg Heffernan pulled goaltender
Eric Sorenson for 46 seconds in favor of an extra attacker in an attempt to get the tying goal and send the contest into overtime, but Reed Rushing sealed the win with an empty-net, shorthanded goal--his first in 2013--with 20 seconds remaining.
Joel Miller made 29 saves to earn his sixth win in eight decisions while Sorenson posted 39 saves.
Shaun Jameson joined Leopards teammate Domsodi with a multi-point outing, earning two assists.
