SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior captain
Brian Prost tallied three points, junior
Matt Dore scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, and sophomore
Chris Lembo netted two goals, as Western New England came from behind three times to double up preseason favorite Wentworth in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey game at Smead Rink on Thursday. The Golden Bears improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the ECAC Northeast, while the two-time defending conference champion Leopards drop to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
Junior netminder
Tim Carr recorded 14 of 26 saves in the first period when Wentworth outshot WNE 15 to 5, taking a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Devin Smith 5 minutes and 20 seconds after the opening face-off.
Late in the first period, Carr was whistled for a 2-minute tripping penalty to prevent a Wentworth player from collecting a rebound shot from the right point. After Wentworth had some 22 seconds of carry-over power-play time into the second period, Prost sent a pass from deep in his end to senior
Chris Connors at center ice after he came out of the box to serve Carr's penalty, and Connors slid behind the defense to tie it at 1-1 just 28 seconds in.
After Ben Iwanowski put Wentworth back in front, 2-1, at the 2:02 mark, Lembo got the equalizer 3 minutes and 5 seconds later.
Then 2:44 after that, Wentworth struck again on the power-play on a Lawton McCracken goal with assists from Mike Domsodi and Beau Burgau.
Prost finished off the scoring in the middle stanza at 10:11 as WNE scored three times to tie the game 3-3 going into the third.
Dore gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the night, 4-3, with the man-advantage as Prost and M D fed Dore with his co-team-leading fourth goal of the season at 10:40.
Lembo stretched the lead to 5-3 at 14:01 with WNE on a 5-minute power-play because Mike Cox was given a major penalty with contact to the head and a 10-minute game misconduct.
Then 3:23 later,
Dan Monahan scored an insurance goal with an open net just as Wentworth goalie Joel Miller (13 saves) started to leave the ice in favor of an extra skater. Wentworth had three shots in the final 2 minutes, but Carr made a pair of saves and a shot was blocked.
Eight different Leopards registered at least one point.
Western New England will host Salve Regina in another ECAC Northeast battle on Saturday at 7:40 p.m.
