Quick Start Powers Nationally-Ranked Golden Bears Past Gordon on the Road

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--Junior attackmen Michael Donahue and Owen Caruso registered three points apiece as Western New England used a quick start to easily dispatch host Gordon 15-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Brigham Complex on Wednesday. The No. 16-ranked Golden Bears improve to 4-3 on the season, including 2-0 in league play, while the Fighting Scots dip to 1-7 and 0-2 in the CCC.

After Jake Martin scored his fifth goal on a pass from Matt Dantona to give Gordon a 1-0 lead 1 minute and 4 seconds after the opening face-off, Donahue scored two of his three goals on the day to close a five-goal first period for the Golden Bears.

Western New England continued the offensive explosion by tallying the only goals--five--in the second quarter for a commanding 10-1 lead at halftime.

Caruso, who had two goals and an assist, found the back of the cage to open the scoring in the third. Gordon snapped WNE's streak of 11 unanswered goals at the 12:11 mark by Mio Sison, who scored another to ignite a four-goal run. But, it was too little, too late for the Fighting Scots who didn't score for the final 20:28.

Besides the scoreboard, Western New England also dominated in shots (47-23), shots on goal (32-11), ground balls (45-31) and turnovers (17-26).

Junior defenseman Jack Liacos led the Golden Bears with five ground balls, followed by junior long-stick midfielder Nicky Donovan and junior middies Alex Meschutt and Troy Powell with four each.

Martin joined Sison with a two-goal effort for Gordon, which also got a game-best eight ground balls from Peter Kovacevic. Kovacevic also won 13 of 22 face-offs at the 'X.'
