QUINCY, Mass.--The Western New England University baseball team established season bests for runs in a game and margin of victory in game one en route to a doubleheader sweep of Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Eastern Nazarene, taking the opener 17-2 and prevailing 7-0 in the second game. The Golden Bears improve to 22-8 overall and 11-1 in the CCC, while the Lions fall to 10-21 and 2-12 in the conference.
Western New England scored in each of the last five innings of the first game to turn a 4-2 lead after four into the 15-run blowout.
The first five batters in the Golden Bears' lineup recorded multiple hits, including senior
Mike Rubino (4-for-5, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI), senior co-captain
Matt Anthonis (3-for-6, 2 runs, 3 RBI), senior
Kyle McKelvey (3-for-4, 3 runs, 3 RBI), sophomore
Steve Buckley (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and junior
Jeff Schult (2-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBI) who combined for 14 of the team's 18 hits and 11 of 16 runs batted in.
For ENC, Jake Koch landed a pair of hits and scored a run on the day while Ryan Garza also notched two base knocks. E.J. Estrada collected one hit and one RBI in the twin bill and Max Pugh added a base knock and crossed the plate once.
Sophomore
Nick Salerno scattered six hits in five innings to get the win, allowing two runs and striking out four. Freshman
David Cherry pitched the final two scoreless frames without surrendering a hit or a walk. He also struck out four.
"We wanted to come out and establish some control over this doubleheader today, and we certainly did that," said Western New England coach Matt LaBranche. "Nick look good today on the mound in his second start, and the middle of the order was immense. When they all hit together, we are awful tough to pitch to."
McKelvey hit his first home run of the season as part of a three-run third before ENC scratched its only two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pugh came around to score from second as Estrada sliced an RBI single to right and Koch advanced to second. After Jeremy Wagner was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Koch crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Western New England defeated Rowan 16 to 5 by 11 runs on March 18 in Florida.
In the nightcap, freshman
Tom Mahoney and junior
Ryan Skelly combined on a four-hit shutout. Mahoney (3-1) worked the first six innings, striking out six and walking one while allowing three hits. Skelly pitched the final three outs while striking out two.
Freshman catcher
Tim Budd led WNE with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and he knocked in two runs. Buckley added two hits and two RBI. The Golden Bears had nine hits as a team.
"It was good to get Tommy back in the rotation and he threw real well. "When he throws his breaking ball for strikes, he is very effective," LaBranche said. "
Taylor Perun swung the bat real good today and finally had something to show for it in this game after making some hard outs in Game 1. That's good news for us as it stretches our lineup and our ability to score some runs."
Western New England took a 2-0 lead into the third inning when the Golden Bears crossed the plate four times to put them comfortably in front. Budd doubled to left center field to cap the four-run rally.
