SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior goalie Tim Carr stopped 28 of 30 shots as the Western New England University men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 non-conference tie with visiting Worcester State University in the Golden Bears' Smead Rink home opener on Thursday. The Lancers now stand at 1-1-1 on the season while Western New England is 0-1-1.

The teams got to a 5-minute overtime period because the Lancers' Rich Ledy notched his second goal of the evening with 11 minutes and 58 seconds to go in regulation, knotting the game 2-2. The Lancers dumped the puck into the WNE zone where it deflected off a Golden Bears defenseman. Ledy followed up with a shot from the right face-off circle that went over Carr's blocker into the upper-left corner of the net.

Sophomore Dane Genord registered his first career collegiate goal to give WNE a 2-1 lead at the 3:55 mark of the third period. Genord picked up a loose puck in the high slot and then turned around to rip a shot past Worcester netminder Tyler Fallica, who finished with 20 saves.

Ledy gave Worcester a 1-0 advantage on a feed from Taylor Laneville with 3:54 remaining in the opening stanza. That was the only goal of the period as the Lancers outshot the Golden Bears, 6-2, over the first 20 minutes.

Junior Chris Lembo tied it 1-1 for the Golden Bears late in the second period as senior Andy Cramer was credited with the assist.

The Lancers controlled the extra session by taking all five shots in the period, but they couldn't solve Carr who preserved the draw.

Both teams will have their conference openers in the next time out. Western New England will travel to Worcester on Sunday (1:50 p.m.) to face Becker College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast affair while the Lancers travel to UMass-Dartmouth in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash on Tuesday.
