Box Score Boxscore

PORTSMOUTH, R.I.--Salve Regina special teams overshadowed a 48-save performance by Western New England junior goaltender Tim Carr on Wednesday evening, as the host Seahawks dealt the Golden Bears a 3-1 defeat in Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey action at the Abbey Ice Rink.

Western New England falls to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the ECAC Northeast standings, remaining in a tie with Curry for the conference's sixth and final playoff spot at eight points each. The Colonels have a game in hand over WNE, which has two more ECAC Northeast dates. Salve, meanwhile, improves to 11-13 on the season and 9-4 in the league.

Senior captain Brian Prost ruined David Chiokadze's shutout bid with his team-leading 11th goal of the season to cut WNE's deficit to 3-1 with 2 minutes and 44 seconds left in the game. Senior assistant captain John Kelly extended his personal record to 16 assists, which ranks fourth in the ECAC Northeast, and senior Cam Napolitan was credited with the secondary assist.

But Salve was staked to a 2-0 lead on a pair of special teams goals off the stick of Jonathan Felteau. In the second period, he registered a short-handed tally on a feed from Peter Gintoli. Then in the third, Felteau scored what proved to be the game-winner at the midpoint of the period.

Gintoli scored his ninth of the season on a pass from John Scorcia at the 13:38 mark of the final stanza to give Salve a 3-1 cushion.

Chiokadze ended up with 35 saves. On the other end, Carr established a career high in saves.

Western New England coach Greg Heffernan pulled Carr for the final 1:30 in a favor of an extra attacker, but the Golden Bears couldn't get a shot on net.

The Golden Bears return to the ice on Saturday (4:40 p.m.) at ECAC Northeast leader Nichols as the teams will play at the Bison's home facility in Burrillville, R.I., Levy Rink.
