Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Senior captain
Brandon Stroud continued his hot scoring streak with three points, and classmate
Tim Carr tied his career-high with 55 saves, to lift the Western New England University men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory Saturday over host Curry College in Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast play at Max Ulin Rink.
With the win, the Golden Bears avenge a 7-2 home loss to the Colonels earlier this season in a big way and snap a 13-game winless string to improve to 2-12-3 on the season. More importantly, however, Western New England gets right back in the ECAC Northeast tournament race with four points (2-5) behind Curry, which owns the final playoff spot with five, and most of the second half of the conference schedule remaining. The Colonels are now 9-6-2 and 2-3-1 in the ECAC Northeast.
Curry struck quickly just 2 minutes and 20 seconds into the game for its only goal of the night off the stick of freshman Jack O'Hara, who beat Carr over his glove. Sophomores Dan McGinnis and James Murphy assisted on the play.
The Golden Bears tied the game less than 5 minutes later on a tally from senior
Andy Cramer. Cramer took a slap shot just over the blueline past Curry's senior goaltender Derek Mohney. Junior
Chris Lembo and senior
Michael Darrar were credited with the assists.
Despite Curry outshooting WNE 23-13 in the second frame, the Colonels couldn't find the back of the net. Solid play between the pipes by Carr held the Colonels scoreless. The Golden Bears were able to put up two more to take a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods. The game-winning goal was scored at the 10:31 minute mark as sophomore
Dane Genord received the puck in front of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Genord was assisted by freshman
David DiSchiavi and Darrar. With 3:18 left, Stroud netted his team's third of the game on assists by DiSchiavi and Genord.
Curry controlled most of the third period holding a commanding 17-6 lead in shots but another strong showing in net for Carr helped seal the win for the Golden Bears. Western New England earned two more over the final 20 minutes. Just three minutes in, sophomore
Josh Twietmeyer stole the puck from a Curry defenseman and skated down the ice for an unassisted tally. The Golden Bears' final score of the night was an empty net goal with 2:01 remaining. The Colonels had possession in WNE's defensive zone but the Golden Bears were able to gain control of the puck. Carr made a save with Stroud winning the rebound. Stroud sent a pass to senior
Matt Dore who sent the puck down the ice into the back of the net. The goalie was credited with his second career assist.
Stroud has three goals and three assists for six points in his last three outings to push his season scoring totals to 5+9=14 to lead the team in assists and points. For his career, he has 40 goals and 92 points in 92 games.
Curry went 0-for-2 on power plays while WNE was 0-1. The Colonels outshot the Golden Bears 56-32. Curry's Mohney had 27 stops in net.
Western New England is scheduled to take on Nichols College on Monday in Harrisville, R.I., at Levy Rink. Curry's next game is away at Nichols two nights later.
