SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 12, 2015) - Freshmen
Braedan Pearl (L'Orignal, Ont.) and
Brian Hurley (Baldwin, N.Y.) each recorded their first collegiate goals in the third period to help the Western New England University ice hockey team overcome a late deficit, but Suffolk University scored with 27 seconds remaining to earn a 4-3 win this evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action at Smead Arena.
ÂÂ
Western New England drops to 0-4 (0-2 ECAC NE) with the setback, while Suffolk improves to 2-0-2 and 1-0-2 in conference play.
ÂÂ
A wild final minute saw Pearl net the equalizer at the 19:25 mark, before Suffolk junior forward
Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) stunned the home crowd with the game-winner just eight seconds later. Hurley had cut Western New England's deficit to one (3-2) midway through the third period with the help of freshman
Tyler Hines (North Haven, Conn.) and sophomore
David DiSchiavi (Etobicoke, Ont.).
ÂÂ
Suffolk opened the scoring this evening just 16 seconds into the contest, as junior forward
Justin Selep (Pittsburgh, Pa.) beat Western New England senior goaltender
Austin Keiser (Danwoody, Ga.) top shelf to stake the Rams to an early 1-0 advantage. The visitors then doubled their lead at the 14:04 mark on a power play goal by junior
Daniel Medvedev (Boston, Mass.), his first of the season.
ÂÂ
Western New England finally broke through midway through the second period, when freshman
Connor Eckenrod (Ebensburg, Pa.) forced a turnover in front of the Suffolk net and senior captain
Chris Lembo (Southington, Conn.) pounced on the puck before sending a shot past Rams' senior netminder
Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.).
ÂÂ
Suffolk would capitalize on another power play opportunity late in the period to regain the lead, however, as Medvedev and freshman
Nick Mosher (Cumming, Ga.) set up Selep's second goal of the night to give the Rams a 3-1 heading into the second intermission.
ÂÂ
Suffolk outshot Western New England by a 39-28 margin, and converted on two of its four chances with a man advantage. Keiser made a season-high 35 saves between the pipes for the Golden Bears, while Smolarek had 25 on the other end.
ÂÂ
Both Western New England and Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday, as the Rams are scheduled to return home to take on Curry and the Golden Bears hit the road for a contest at Nichols.
