SheetSPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior goalie
Tim Carr made history and sophomore
Dane Genord scored the game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 34 seconds left as the Western New England men's hockey team overcame a one-goal deficit to clip the wings of the Becker College Ice Hawks, 3-2, on Thursday evening at Smead Rink at Blunt Park. The host Golden Bears win their first home game of the 2014-15 to improve to 3-12-3 on the season, including 3-5 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast standings. Becker falls to 4-15 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
Carr stopped 34 of 36 shots he faced to give him 1,400 career saves, surpassing Joe Lashway for fourth place on the school's all-time list. Lashway recorded 1367 in 49 games from 1986-90. Next on the list is Brett Remillard (1,490 in 52 games from 1990-94) and Nathan Stockton (1,504 in 37, 1997-2001).
Western New England scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit, with senior
Nick Diorio and Genord scoring 2 minutes and 27 seconds apart beginning at the 12:49 mark. Sophomore
Josh Twietmeyer circled the net while drawing a defender behind him and then found a wide-open Diorio streaking down the slot, one-timing the shot into the lower-right corner of the goal. Then at 15:16 into the period, Genord potted his team-leading seventh tally of the season by pouncing on his own rebound into the upper-right corner. Senior captain
Brandon Stroud and classmate
David Tavella were credited with assists on the play.
The Ice Hawks called a timeout with 43 seconds left and pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater to try to get the tying goal, possibly forcing overtime. Senior assistant captain
Matt Dore blocked a shot from the left point and cleared the puck from his defensive zone on two occasions, helping WNE preserve its second win in a row and climb into the conference's playoff structure.
Becker took a 2-1 advantage in the second period. Cody Edwards notched his second goal, shorthanded, at 7:48 on assists by Tyler Auricchio and Justin Erhart. Nicholas McKee followed with his seventh at 14:24 from Kyle Godfrey and Connor Merrick.
Goalie Gregg Hussey had 20 of his 35 saves in the first period to keep Becker from trailing by more than a 1-0 game, as the Golden Bears outshot the Hawks 21 to 8 over the opening 20 minutes. Twietmeyer was able to solve Hussey at the 9:41 mark with the Golden Bears on the power play, scoring his third goal of the season on assists from Tavella and junior
Chris Lembo. But if it wasn't for Hussey, the Golden Bears could have easily scored three or four more goals in the opening stanza. Freshman
David DiSchiavi was robbed twice on back-to-back shots from the top of the crease and Lembo took a wrist shot from the top of the slot that was deflected by Hussey.
In the second period, Twietmeyer fired a shot from the right face-off circle with WNE on a 2-on-1 break that was gloved down by Hussey--potentially giving the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead at the time. However, one minute later, it was Becker that went up by that score when McKee found the back of the net.
