SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 28, 2016) - The Wentworth Institute of Technology used four unanswered goals to rally past Western New England University for a 5-2 win this evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast men's ice hockey action at Smead Arena.
ÂÂ
Western New England led 2-1 midway through the second period on goals by freshman
David Kleyman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior
Dane Genord (Grand Blanc, Mich.), but the visiting Leopards regained the lead with a two-goal spurt over the final 1:11 of the frame before tacking on two more goals in the third.
ÂÂ
Freshman defenseman
Brian Hurley (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior forward
Chris Lembo (Southington, Conn.) tallied two assists each for the Golden Bears, while senior goaltender
Austin Keiser (Danwoody, Ga.) finished with 32 saves in net.
ÂÂ
Western New England successfully killed off Wentworth's first two power plays in the opening ten minutes, but the Leopards struck first at the 14:19 mark on junior defenseman
Jake Flynn's (Lino Lakes, Minn.) fifth goal of the season. The lead would be short lived, however, as the Golden Bears equalized with the help of a power play less than two minutes later. Lembo sent a pass across the slot to Kleyman, who beat Wentworth senior netminder
Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) top shelf to level the score.
ÂÂ
Western New England then took the lead 8:29 into the second period, capitalizing on its second power play of the night as Genord finished at the right post on a feed from Hurley after Wentworth was penalized for having too many men on the ice. Genord has now scored in four straight games, while Lembo extends his point streak to five contests with his two helpers.
ÂÂ
The Golden Bears appeared to be headed for the second intermission with a 2-1 lead, but freshman
Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) tied the score for the second time at the 18:49 mark and sophomore
Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J.) put the visitors ahead just nine seconds before the break.
ÂÂ
Although Western New England outshot Wentworth 18-7 in the third, the Leopards tacked on two more goals in the frame, as senior
Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) scored midway through the period and sophomore
Nick Newman (Saugus, Calif.) added an empty-netter late.
ÂÂ
Western New England, which converted on two of its three power play opportunities, held a 38-37 edge in shots, while Wentworth had a 49-38 advantage in the faceoff circle. Miller finished with 36 saves for the Leopards, half of which came in the third period.
ÂÂ
Western New England (1-14-3, 0-8-1 ECAC NE) and Wentworth (4-13-2, 3-6-1 ECAC NE) will both be back in action on Saturday, as the Golden Bears head to Boston to take on Suffolk, and the Leopards travel to Providence for a matchup with Johnson & Wales.
