AUBURN, Mass. – The Western New England men's hockey team picked-up its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Johnson & Wales in an opening round game of the Pepperidge Farm Classic Thursday night (Nov. 10) at Horgan Rink.
The Golden Bears will meet host Worcester State (who defeated Suffolk 7-4 in an earlier contest) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 12) in the title game.
Sophomore forward
Chris Connors (Albany, NY) tallied a pair of goals for Western New England while sophomore forward
John Kelly (Long Island, NY) chipped-in three assists.
Freshman forward
Brandon Stroud (Clarksville, IN) contributed a goal and assist. He opened the scoring with a power play goal at 4:54 of the opening period with assists from Kelly and freshman defenseman
Adam Bristol (Carmel, IN).
Connors added another power play goal at 4:55 of the middle period for a 2-0 advantage as Stroud and Kelly received assists.
Freshman forward
Matt Dore (Shelbourne, MA) fired in his first collegiate score at the 9:36 mark that gave WNE a 3-0 advantage. Freshman forward

Michael Darrar (Monroe Township, NJ) gained the assists.
Western New England stretched its margin to 4-0 when Connors scored just 54 seconds later with Kelly and sophomore forward
Brian Probst (Parma, OH) assisting on the play.
Sophomore forward
Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN) gave the Golden Bears their biggest lead at 5-0 scoring with 50 seconds left in the period. Senior forward
Kory Grahl (San Diego, CA) had the assist.
Johnson & Wales finally got on the board when senior forward
Jeremiah Kitts (Foristell, MO) netted a goal with 14 seconds remaining in the stanza. He also scored their final goal at 3:58 of the third period.
Western New England received a nice performance from sophomore goalie
Eric Sorenson (Fairport, NY) who finished with 44 saves in just under 50 minutes. Junior
T.J. Fatse (Hampden, MA) turned away eight shots in the final 10:39.
Junior
Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, OH) compiled 46 saves for the Wildcats.
Western New England is now 1-1 while JWU suffers its first loss in three outings.
