SheetPORTSMOUTH, R.I.--Western New England played Salve Regina for the first and third periods but it was the middle stanza that doomed the visiting Golden Bears in a 7-2 Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey setback at Abbey Ice Rink on Saturday evening. Western New England falls to 1-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the ECAC Northeast while the Seahawks improve to 3-2-2 on the season, including 3-2 in the conference.
Salve got on the board first while trying to kill off a power play for WNE as John Scorcia scored his first goal of the season, unassisted, midway through the first period. But the Golden Bears tied it 1-1 on senior captain
Brandon Stroud first goal of the season, unassisted, with just 3 seconds remaining in the opening period.
But the Seahawks took control in the second period with five goals, ignited by Scorcia and Alex Pompeo 26 seconds apart in the first 2 minutes. Scorcia ended up with four goals and an assist in the contest.
Sophomore
Dane Genord scored WNE's other goal in the third period.
Freshman
Scott Brown started his first game in the WNE net and he made 20 saves while playing the first 40 minutes. Senior
Tim Carr finished up for the Golden Bears with 10 saves. Jake Williams stopped 20 of 22 shots for the Seahawks, who had 37 on Brown and Carr.
Western New England hits the ice again at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Manhattanville on the road in Purchase, N.Y.
